Lu Zhang

ARTIST IN RESIDENCY – MONTREAL, Qc, Canada
AUGUST 16 to 27, 2019

PROJECT
In Montreal, Lu will explore a third iteration of an ongoing project, House of Being. House of Being references the 17 verbs of the Maison d’être, a mnemonic device used to help French learners differentiate verbs which use être (to be) as an auxiliary verb, as opposed to avoir (to have). In earlier presentations, House of Being has taken the form of a collaborative artist book and interactive reading installation produced with Cynthia Oyervides; and a photo and text contribution to Sentiments: Expressions of Cultural Passage. Published by Press Press, Sentiments is a compilation of the sensitivities, hacks, gestures, and actions used by immigrants to nourish and preserve our communities. The project in Montreal will be the first exploration of House of Being in a French speaking context.
PRACTICE
Lu Zhang is a multi-disciplinary artist, researcher, and organizer who works in installation, sculpture, drawing, and text – often in response to a chosen site.
Lu takes specific sites/contexts as a point of departure. Recognizing the processes and people already present, she adapts her methods to respond to and temporarily inhabit a place. She engages sites intuitively; through responding to its historical context; tracing its physical manifestations; mining its function; and collaborating with its workers.

BIO
Lu Zhang has collaborated with ICA Baltimore, PressPress, and SPARE to produce publications and exhibitions; the George Peabody Library to launch a studio residency program, and The Contemporary to build resource initiatives for artists. Lu is the founder of the Institute for Expanded Research, an artist project that supports artist-led research initiatives and facilitates collaborative partnerships between artists and researchers across sectors.
Lu received her MFA at the Frank Mohr Institute in the Netherlands and her BFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.
