Following the idea of an « open studio » we invite you to join us for a friendly exchange with the artist on Friday January 17, from 6 to 9 PM.
PROJECT
In Channel Mater, Ariel Cavalcante Foster develops the practice of painting throughout her printmaking process. The fabric installations are standing moments of occurrences, existing as an encapsulation of an unwatched movement, meditation or play. While, abstract oil paintings hold substances of dried plants and the subject’s materials. The press is her body; through the pressure of her feet and guided by music, it becomes a dance. A performance that goes unseen, hidden inside the work itself, speaks to the labor and process of the artist's practice. While printing, painting surfaces as an outlet for subconscious, immediate and intuitive creation, becoming reflections on subjects in nature. Ariel paints with the powdered remnants of pastels, beads, dried flowers and plants. Dyed and suspended, the tapestries’ carved linoleum prints contain narratives of animals, farmers, divine creators and plant life. The chance for body and movement in fabric informs the design of the installations, the cloth levitates and drapes as sustaining an action.
